SalinaDocFest is based on a dream, the dream of giving a proper cinema to Salina and of making a cinema of the whole of the Salina island. This dream is sustained with extreme love and passion by Giovanna Taviani, the festival director, who believes in documentary filmmaking, a non-mainstream genre that has recently experienced great moments in Italy as well, thanks to that unique language which has brough the Berlinale 2016 Golden Bear to ‘Fuocammare’, a documentary by Italian filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi. The film has also been screened during the last edition of the SDF. For our festival, documentary cinema means storytelling, reportage, honesty, language innovation and even dreaming, hence the choice of the stunning Isalnd of Salina as the location for the festival.
SalinaDocFest brought to Salina many personalities from the realm of cinema, music and culture – both national and international – people who loved both the Island and the Festival, personalities such as Golshifteh Farahani, Nicola Piovani, Martin Scorsese, Roberto Saviano, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Gianfranco Rosi, Daniele Vicari, Franco Battiato, Edoardo Bennato, Emma Bonino, Vinicio Capossela, Emma Dante, Niccolò Fabi, Beppe Fiorello, Daniele Lucchetti, Curzio Maltese,  Roy Paci, Valerio Mastrandrea, Kasja Smutniak, , Irene Grandi, Ascanio Celestini, Mimmo Cuticchio, Moni Ovadia.
It is also worth highlighting the social dimension of this event, which translates into different collaborations, for example the one with Anfe (National Association of Emigrant Families) or other groups. The Festival has also the support of MIBACT, Regione Sicilia and  Sicilia Film Commission. Furthermore, the festival is part of the Calendar of the “Big Tourist Events” of Regione Sicilia.
