The King of Laughter (Qui Rido Io)

  • Riverside Studios 101 Queen Caroline St W6 9BN (map)

Belle Époque Naples, comedian Eduardo Scarpetta is the king of the box office. Rising from very humble origins, theater is now his life, with his complex family core made of wives, companions, lovers, legitimate and illegitimate children gravitating around it.

At the height of his success, Scarpetta embarks on a dangerous gamble: bringing on scene a parody of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s play The Daughter of Iorio. The influential poet sues Scarpetta for plagiarism, setting off the first historic copyright lawsuit in Italy.

But when everything seems to be going in pieces, he will challenge his fate with a great actor’s performance and win his last game.

Mario Martone’s latest film will bring you at the core of Italian comedy and give you insight into the genesis of timeless classics, like Miseria e Nobiltà.
